Coda tells you stories you never heard before, shows you connections you never knew existed and the nuance and complexity of the world.
What is Coda?
The world is rapidly being overtaken by overarching storylines that inform virtually every facet of politics, from the local to the global. These storylines –whether the disinformation campaigns that are feeding the war on truth or the new technologies that are feeding the growing authoritarianism shaping whole regions—are the crises that can only be understood in context. Coda deploys a team of local and international reporters, video journalists, artists and designers to give context within these storylines and illuminate the continuity between these crises.
How Coda Stays on the Story
Coda takes one crisis at a time and deploys a team of local and international reporters, video journalists, artists and designers to think through what themes and stories fuel each crisis (we call these themes running through each crisis “currents”).
Our editors then begin to commission, tapping into a network of freelancers around the world. We work closely with our journalists, helping them to get the best story they can, and we always want to hear new story ideas.
You may notice that so far we have done a lot of stories about Russia, and we do have a Russian language platform that has its own editorial agenda. But Coda is not about Russia. In fact, these days in order to do meaningful journalism on any big issue, it is important to show how the local impacts the global and vice versa.
Because we think of journalism as public service, Coda is a 501(c)3 U.S non-profit. We have offices in New York City and Tbilisi, Georgia (the two hometowns of Coda’s two co-founders) and teams spread around the world. We work with a wide network of partners and are supported by foundation grants and private donations. Coda is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News and the Global Investigative Journalism Network. About 20% of our revenue is generated by animation and video production for outside clients.
We are format agnostic: we’ve done documentaries, video podcasts, long-reads, shortreads, animations and even an app that told a story in a graphic novel format. We report globally and in the United States, because we believe these days in order to do meaningful journalism on any big issue, it is important to show how local impacts the global and vice versa.

What does Coda mean?
In music a coda is a distinctive passage, usually towards the end, which defines the entire composition. In journalism we want to be a stand-alone voice which helps to define a crisis.
